Two close adolescent pals,
Laney Grey and
Skye Blue, are chilling in Laney's bedroom. As Laney's stepmother,
Dee Williams, pops in to check on them, she gives Laney a gentle reminder about the unfinished task of organizing the guestroom closet. Dee has been asking Laney non-stop to complete the task for quite some time.
Despite Skye's presence, Laney must finish the job today, or she'll find herself in trouble and punished. Once Dee departs, Laney tries to avoid the chore, but Skye persuades her to tackle it. Skye doesn't want her best friend to get in trouble.
Working together, they're convinced they can finish organizing the closet quickly. Laney and Skye start sorting through the closet and stumble upon an old diary, realizing it belongs to Dee. After some discussion, they decide to browse through it, thinking it could be harmless amusement.
While perusing the entries, they stumble upon an intimate passage detailing Dee grappling with emotions towards another girl, unsure whether to explore them or not. Astounded and touched by the discovery, Laney and Skye agree to confront Dee. Bearing the diary and admitting to reading it, Dee is initially upset that she left her diary in such an accessible place.
However, once Laney and Skye disclose newfound knowledge about Dee's feelings, Dee is completely taken aback. Gradually, Dee opens up to Laney and Skye, confessing that society in her time wasn't open to individuals like today. She was unable to act on her emotions, and even now, fear grips her too tightly.
United with encouragement and warmth from Laney and Skye, when offered a chance at experiences she always denied herself, Dee's lifelong barriers begin to crumble.
